When was the last time you travelled for business, pleasure, or a combination of both? On an annual basis, around four-out-of-five people travel throughout the United States for leisure. Vacation travel, according to 37% of the families surveyed, is one of the activities that make them the most happy.

in addition to traveling throughout the United States for vacations and other leisure activities, Americans also love to travel abroad. In 2014, for example, around 30.78 million Americans traveled overseas. When traveling in European countries, Americans enjoyed engaging in these leisure activities:

    Shopping
    Sightseeing
    Fine dining
    National parks and monuments
    Amusement and theme parks

In 2014, the United States’ travel and tourism industry was one of its largest industries. The gross domestic product contribution for that year was $1.47 trillion U.S. dollars. In 2015, both domestic and international travelers spent a combined total of $650.8 billion on leisure trips.

Two of the more popular tourist destinations for Americans as well as international travelers are New York City and Paris, France. During 2015, however, more international than domestic travelers visited New York City. In fact, this major city experienced 10.13 million international travelers throughout the year.

The City of Lights had over 70 million tourists in 2015. These tourists spent almost $30 million American dollars while visiting France.

Both leisure and business trips were substantial in 2015. United States’ residents took 1.7 billion leisure trips and 459 million business trips. Approximately 37% of these business trips were for meetings and other business-oriented events.
